Arrival/Check-In: Opened in 1969 as the first hotel at Frankfurt International Airport, the Steigenberger remains a large, lively property designed for travelers. I arrived around 7 p.m. during a busy period, yet the front desk handled the crowd efficiently. Multiple reception stations were staffed and I was checked in within about five minutes.
Guest Quarters: The hotel features 570 guestrooms. Approximately 200 are standard rooms and about 100 were upgraded to superior in 2012. The Executive Tower has its own elevator and includes junior and executive suites, plus a presidential suite.
I stayed in the Executive Tower in an executive suite decorated in subdued gray tones. The closet was generous and stocked with many sturdy hangers. The hotel advertises soundproofing, and despite being roughly 1,000 feet from the airport I slept through the night without disturbance. My only gripe was the bathroom: toiletries were limited and there was no shower cap provided.
Services/Amenities: Dining options include four restaurants and a large 24-hour bistro/bar in the lobby. The property borders forested areas with trails suitable for hiking and biking. A convenient complimentary shuttle to the airport runs every 15 minutes around the clock; rides take three to four minutes and require no reservation.
The Experience: The Steigenberger focuses on making short-stay travelers comfortable and facilitating fast, effortless transfers to the airport. With an early-morning flight, I checked out at 5:30 a.m. Check-out was as prompt and pleasant as check-in—efficient, professional and friendly even in the early hour.
