World-renowned British conservationist David Bellamy once said, “The best example of conservation of biodiversity I have ever seen – Grootbos says it with flowers.” Visiting Grootbos reveals why: it is a truly exceptional nature destination that blends outstanding conservation with unforgettable guest experiences.
Located under two hours from Cape Town and overlooking the dramatic Walker Bay, Grootbos combines warm hospitality, attentive service, refined luxury, excellent cuisine and fine South African wines with a deep commitment to protecting a unique natural environment.
Grootbos has also formed international conservation partnerships: the Eden Project in Cornwall is a major collaborator, working with Grootbos to develop a South African domes display and to promote global connections between people and plants. Central to this collaboration is Grootbos’s extraordinary floral diversity. The reserve protects more than 6,100 acres of the Cape Floral Kingdom and is home to over 750 species of indigenous flowering plants. Whether on foot, horseback or a four-by-four drive, exploring Grootbos Nature Reserve introduces visitors of all ages to the subtle wonders of this unique ecosystem.
Beyond its floral riches, Grootbos offers a wide range of activities to suit many interests: birdwatching, whale watching, diving with great white sharks, and relaxing on pristine beaches. The variety of experiences ensures there is something for everyone.
From the outset, Grootbos’s owners have prioritized both biodiversity conservation and community development. In 2004 they established the non-profit Grootbos Foundation to manage environmental and social development programs. The foundation’s mission focuses on conserving biodiversity and creating sustainable, nature-based livelihoods through ecotourism, research, reserve management and education.
Revenue from Grootbos’s ecotourism operations, together with guest donations and other contributions, funds key conservation and community projects in the Walker Bay region. In this model, every guest staying at Grootbos directly supports biodiversity protection and local social initiatives. The foundation also seeks to make many of its projects financially sustainable by encouraging the development and sale of locally produced goods.
At Grootbos you are welcomed into a place where conservation, social responsibility, luxury and relaxation come together seamlessly. It is a destination that not only offers exceptional natural beauty and activities but also demonstrates how tourism can support lasting environmental and community benefits.
