An estimated 1 million people gather in Times Square for the New Year’s Eve ball drop, but the NYC Pride March routinely draws the city’s largest single-day crowd. In an ordinary year, the parade attracts about 2.5 million spectators and swelled to more than 5 million for 2019’s WorldPride. Pride activity fills New York City throughout June with marches, panels, performances, parties and events across venues large and small.
Pride celebrations take place on all six inhabited continents. In the Middle East, Tel Aviv hosts a week of Pride events capped by a family-friendly parade that draws roughly 250,000 participants and onlookers. Taipei holds Asia’s biggest parade, with around 200,000 people lining streets that remain shared with regular traffic—meaning anyone can join. Tokyo Rainbow Pride attracts a similar crowd and features the colorful floats and costumes many expect. Few international celebrations match the spectacle of Sydney Mardi Gras, the host of this year’s WorldPride. Sydney’s festival remains one of the state’s top economic drivers, offering parties, a Bondi Beach drag “Olympics,” a film festival and an extravagant parade.

In South America, Brazil’s São Paulo Gay Pride Parade regularly breaks attendance records and has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records multiple times. The parade’s economic impact rivals major national festivals, and São Paulo is widely regarded as one of Latin America’s most welcoming cities for the LGBTQIA+ community. In Africa, large-scale pride gatherings are primarily limited to South Africa, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2006; these events often have a more political and reflective tone alongside celebration. Caribbean Pride events tend to be smaller or hosted privately at resorts, but Curaçao marks a notable exception: Curaçao Pride celebrates its tenth anniversary this summer with a multiday program of vibrant, community-focused events throughout June.
