Hyatt Opens First Hotel in Iraq: What Travelers Need to Know

Hyatt Hotels Corporation is set to open its first Hyatt-branded hotel in Iraq, located in the country’s Kurdistan region. Scheduled for a 2017 opening, Hyatt Regency Sulaymaniyah will be the only hotel within Hawary Shar Park, a 240-acre leisure and entertainment development that will include a shopping mall, zoological gardens and a golf course.

The new property will offer 210 guestrooms and a variety of guest amenities designed for both business and leisure travelers. Dining options will include an all-day restaurant, and wellness facilities will feature a fitness center, a spa with five treatment rooms, and three swimming pools. For meetings and events, the hotel will provide more than 17,500 square feet of flexible function space.

Peter Norman, senior vice president of real estate and development for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, described the project as a significant milestone: “Bringing the Hyatt brand to Iraq is one of the most exciting projects we have in development. Kurdistan is a stable and prosperous area of Iraq, and as a result, the economy is growing and demand for lodging accommodations is rising.”

The hotel’s location within the wider Hawary Shar Park development positions it to serve visitors attracted by the park’s retail, recreational and entertainment offerings as well as business travelers visiting the Sulaymaniyah area. With its combination of guest rooms, dining, wellness and meeting space, Hyatt Regency Sulaymaniyah aims to meet growing demand for high-quality accommodations in the region.
