It’s whale migration season along the Mendocino Coast, and the community of Little River is preparing for the Little River Whale Festival, taking place March 14–15. Festival highlights include the Taste of Little River featuring local appetizers and wines, the Kayak Mendocino Sea Cave Tour—an opportunity to paddle alongside harbor seals, sea stars and shorebirds—and a two-hour guided Whale Watch Walk with binoculars available for participants. The walk also includes a search for cormorants and native coastal plants, such as blooming seaside daisies.
To make the visit easier and more memorable, Little River Inn is offering a romance-themed getaway package. The package includes a two-night stay in an Ocean View Fireplace Room, a romantic dinner for two, a map marking the town’s “kissing benches,” and two hand-knit beanies from the Mendocino Yarn Shop (limited supply). Guests also receive a souvenir backpack stocked with practical hiking items and treats—including a water bottle, John Masters Organics Lip Calm, breath mints and a fudge confection. Optional room upgrades and massage treatments are available for an additional fee.
Whether you come to watch migrating whales from the shore, paddle through sea caves, or stroll the rugged coastline in search of birds and wildflowers, Little River and the Mendocino Coast offer a peaceful, scenic escape. Dress in layers for coastal winds, bring binoculars for wildlife viewing, and reserve accommodations early—the festival draws visitors eager to experience the region’s marine life, dramatic vistas and small-town hospitality.
