The OAG Punctuality League 2018, OAG’s annual ranking of on-time performance, summarizes aviation punctuality data for 2017.
Hawaiian Airlines ranked as the most punctual carrier in North America for 2017 and the third-most punctual worldwide, posting an average on-time performance of 87.2%. Rounding out the top five North American carriers were Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines, in that order. Some leading carriers experienced modest declines in punctuality compared with the previous year: Hawaiian’s on-time performance dipped by 2.6 percentage points and Delta’s by 1.5 points.
Among airports, Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) topped the Major Airports category for punctuality. In the Mega Airport category, U.S. hubs performed strongly, placing third (Atlanta Hartsfield‑Jackson), fourth (Denver) and fifth (Dallas/Fort Worth).
“Flight delays and cancellations have historically been one of the most stressful aspects of travel,” said Mike Benjamin, COO of OAG. “That’s slowly changing as more airports and airlines prioritize on-time performance. In 2017, we saw investments in punctuality pay off: the United States performed exceptionally well against global counterparts, with five airlines and four airports finishing in the Top 10 globally in their respective Mega categories.”
OAG also evaluated punctuality on the busiest routes. In the United States, the busiest domestic route between New York LaGuardia (LGA) and Chicago O’Hare (ORD) recorded the best on-time percentage among busiest domestic routes at 73.7%, with United Airlines the top-performing carrier on that segment. For international traffic, the Hong Kong (HKG) to Taipei (TPE) corridor remained the most heavily trafficked route overall.
The 2017 results reflect incremental improvements in punctuality driven by airport and airline investments, schedule adjustments and operational focus. While some carriers experienced slight declines, the broader trend indicated stronger performance from U.S. operators and key airports compared with many global peers. Travelers and industry stakeholders can view these rankings as evidence that targeted efforts to reduce delays and cancellations are having a measurable impact on on-time arrivals and departures.
