A recent SSI QuickPoll survey found that many travelers are aware of the potential for terrorist threats in both Europe and the United States. Thirty-seven percent of respondents expressed concern about terrorist threats in European destinations, while 30 percent said they were worried about similar threats at home. These concerns were notably higher than worries about the Zika virus or safety issues related to Europe’s migrant situation.
Despite this heightened concern, some travelers still plan to visit Europe. The survey showed that 13 percent intended to travel to Europe within the year, and another 14 percent were considering a trip. Paris remained one of the most popular choices, even after last year’s attacks. “The threat of terrorism both at home and abroad is a real factor for people considering their travel plans. What’s fascinating is that despite this more general concern of terrorism, some people are still planning trips to regions that recently experienced attacks,” said Jackie Lorch, vice president of knowledge management at SSI.
Respondents were also asked to rate a range of destinations based on perceived threat levels for American travelers. Israel received the highest danger rating among the locations listed. North Africa, Egypt and France followed as destinations perceived to carry greater risk. By contrast, the Caribbean and Canada were rated among the lowest-threat destinations for Americans.
