Sonoma’s Barlow Apple Cannery Reborn as an Artisans’ Marketplace

In Sonoma, the historic Barlow Apple Cannery has been thoughtfully reimagined as a vibrant marketplace and production hub for local artisans and food producers. This restored complex now combines retail, craft production and community space to celebrate the region’s makers and food traditions.

Phase One, which opened in January, introduced several notable tenants. Kosta Browne Winery, Wolfard Glassblowing Company, Guayaki Yerbe Mate and Bronze Plus Art Foundry have all established storefronts and production spaces. Additional small-scale food producers and craft businesses — from butchers and bakers to candle makers — are scheduled to occupy the remaining shop spaces in the coming months, with new openings planned for April 1.

Occupying 215,000 square feet, the Barlow complex is marketed as one of the first business communities in the country to directly connect customers with working artists and food artisans on the site where products are actually made. The site is designed to support both production and customer interaction, allowing visitors to watch artisans at work and purchase goods fresh from the source.

Beyond shops and studios, the Barlow also hosts community-oriented amenities. The site will serve as the location for the Sebastopol Farmers Market, and includes outdoor recreation and gathering spaces such as bocce ball courts, fire pits and seating areas that encourage socializing and events.

The redevelopment honors the site’s industrial heritage while giving it a contemporary purpose: a place where local producers, artisans and the public meet. By combining production spaces with retail storefronts and communal areas, the Barlow aims to create an active, walkable destination that supports small businesses and enhances Sonoma’s culinary and craft scene.
