Puerto Vallarta is widely recognized as one of the world’s most LGBTQ-friendly destinations, and the city is strengthening that reputation with new measures designed to enhance safety and inclusivity.
Among the steps recently introduced are the establishment of an Office of Gender Equality and a program of sensitivity training for local businesses.
“Puerto Vallarta is today a city where we consider respect for differences a primary value, offering dignified, respectful and equal treatment to all people regardless of nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Mayor Arturo Dávalos Peña. “Since becoming an international tourist destination, Puerto Vallarta has been praised for its hospitality, friendliness and high standards of service for all visitors.”
Mexico overall is a major destination for LGBTQ travelers, and Puerto Vallarta sits at the heart of that appeal. In 2016, the country received millions of LGBTQ visitors who contributed significantly to the tourism economy. The new Office of Gender Equality highlights the city’s commitment to making LGBTQ residents and visitors feel safe and supported. Staffed to address LGBTQ concerns, the office serves as a resource and point of contact for those living in or visiting Puerto Vallarta.
To further strengthen inclusive tourism offerings, the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board is sponsoring a 12-course training program developed in collaboration with national tourism authorities. The curriculum aims to improve the quality, inclusivity and respectfulness of products and services available to LGBTQ guests. The training is scheduled to begin May 25 and will be offered to local hoteliers and tour operators to help ensure welcoming experiences across the destination.
