Incheon Travel Guide: Top Things to See and Do in South Korea

INCHEON

Incheon, often considered part of the greater Seoul metropolitan area, is a major city and destination in its own right. With over 2.7 million residents, it is South Korea’s third-largest city and a bustling industrial port on the Yellow Sea. The city appeals to visitors interested in business, architecture, art, culture, cuisine and nightlife. Explore the arts and performance scene around the Arts Centre central square, shop and sample local and international dishes in the lively Bupyeong district, and visit Korea’s only Chinatown for distinctive food and atmosphere. After exploring the city center, take a short ferry to discover the scenic islands off Incheon’s coast.

GETTING THERE

Incheon International Airport (ICN) sits on Yeongjong Island, west of downtown Incheon. It is South Korea’s largest airport and a primary hub for Asiana Airlines, Korean Air and Jeju Air. A taxi to the city center takes about 25 minutes and costs roughly $50. The AREX (Airport Railroad Express) connects the airport to the subway network—take AREX to Gyeyang (approximately $2.50) and transfer to the Incheon Subway (fares under $3). The express AREX service, which costs the same, saves about 30 minutes. Limousine buses serve many major points around the city, with fares around $10 and typical rides of 50 minutes depending on traffic.

GETTING AROUND

The Incheon Subway, operated by the Incheon Rapid Transit Corporation, currently consists of a single line with 29 stations and connects with the Seoul Metropolitan Subway at Bupyeong station. Fares are inexpensive—roughly $1 for the first six miles with small incremental charges after that. The city’s local bus system is extensive, with more than 2,000 buses covering routes across Incheon. Taxis are widely available with meters starting at about $2, offering a convenient option for shorter trips or late-night travel.

TOP ATTRACTIONS

Jayu Park
Jayu Park, also called Liberty or Freedom Park, offers pleasant walks, sculptures and panoramic views of downtown Incheon and the Yellow Sea. The park functions like an open-air history museum and features significant monuments, including a statue of General Douglas MacArthur, who led the amphibious Incheon landing during the Korean War, and a monument marking a century of U.S.–Korea friendship.

Jeondeungsa Temple
Perched on Mt. Jeongjoksan on Ganghwa Island, Jeondeungsa Temple is among Korea’s oldest Buddhist sites. Tradition holds it was established by descendants of Dangun, the legendary founder of Korea. The temple complex includes about ten wooden buildings showcasing various architectural styles, ornate carvings and paintings that are centuries old. Visiting in April or early May coincides with the Lotus Lantern Festival, when the temple and surroundings are adorned with colorful lanterns.

SKY72 is one of the region’s largest golf facilities and features a Nicklaus Design championship course. The club offers a 400-yard driving range with some 300 stations and four distinct courses that showcase varied landscapes—cliffs, rolling hills and ocean views—making it a top choice for golfers of different skill levels.
