The world’s first runway sauna opened for a single day this month at Helsinki Airport in Finland. In a country with more than three million saunas, this temporary structure joined a long tradition, but it also acted as a vivid symbol of Finnish wellbeing and happiness.
Placed close to the runway, the sauna was not intended for passenger use; instead it was built as a playful, attention-grabbing showcase of Finland’s sauna culture. The small wooden cabin was commissioned by Finavia, the Finnish airport operator, and sited near one of the airport’s runways to highlight a contrast between the chilly, fast-paced environment of air travel and the warmth, calm and coziness associated with Finnish saunas.

“Most airports have transit zones – some even have saunas. But only Helsinki Airport can offer a transit to Finnish happiness. It is the touchpoint to tune into the rhythm, values and mindset of Finland. Your story can go anywhere from here. To showcase this short transition, we built the world’s first runway sauna at Helsinki Airport,” said Anna Tuomi, head of marketing at Finavia.
Although the runway sauna was temporary, passengers visiting Helsinki Airport need not miss out entirely: the airport includes a permanent sauna inside one of its lounges. In Finnair’s Platinum Wing Lounge, travelers can enjoy a traditional wood-burning Finnish sauna as well as private shower suites. These facilities are available to top-tier Finnair and oneworld elite members, offering a restful start or finish to a journey.
Finnair has not introduced an in-flight sauna—aside from a playful April Fool’s prank earlier this year that imagined a sauna aboard an A350—and the idea remains fanciful rather than practical. Still, the lounge sauna helps introduce travelers to a central element of Finnish culture before they even leave the airport, reinforcing sauna’s role as a ritual of relaxation, social connection and wellbeing throughout Finland.
By staging the short-lived runway installation, Finavia drew attention to the emotional and cultural importance of saunas in Finnish life. The project served both as an inventive public relations moment and a reminder that travel can be more than movement from one place to another: it can be an introduction to a place’s values and traditions, starting the moment passengers step into the airport.
