Fall in the Windy City brings a crispness to the air and a calendar full of compelling events — perfect reasons to bundle up and explore Chicago. On Oct. 4, the inaugural Great Chicago Fire Festival presents a dramatic, free public tribute to the city’s resilience after the Great Fire of 1871. Produced by Redmoon Theater in partnership with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, the one-day celebration on the main branch of the Chicago River features large-scale machinery, flames and pyrotechnics that transform the riverside into a theatrical commemoration.
From Oct. 9–23, the Chicago International Film Festival marks its 50th year by screening roughly 200 films from more than 50 countries at venues across the city. Highlights of the festival include the North American premiere of the rediscovered and restored 1929 jazz-age comedy Why Be Good, directed by William A. Seiter, alongside a diverse program of contemporary features, documentaries and short films.
Also in October, the Joffrey Ballet stages its first-ever production of Swan Lake from Oct. 15–26 at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University. Choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, this interpretation of one of the world’s most beloved ballets brings striking choreography and production values to a landmark downtown venue.
These events reflect the seasonal energy of Chicago: public outdoor spectacles, a major international film showcase and a landmark ballet premiere. Whether you’re drawn to pyrotechnic theater along the river, landmark cinema from around the world, or classical ballet in a historic theater, October in Chicago offers memorable cultural experiences for locals and visitors alike.
