Every year, Airbus runs an international student competition called Fly Your Ideas, inviting teams from around the world to propose innovations that improve air travel. This year a team from Hong Kong presented a prototype called the Private Stowage Compartment: a hollow box designed to slide beneath the seat in front of a passenger and store a standard carry-on bag or personal items.
With many airlines charging high fees for checked luggage, more travelers are bringing carry-on bags only. That trend has made overhead storage scarce, leaving late boarders to stow bags several rows away from their seats. The Private Stowage Compartment addresses that problem by giving each passenger dedicated under-seat storage, reducing congestion in the overhead bins and simplifying boarding and deplaning.
The Hong Kong team, DAELead, won the $33,000 grand prize in the competition. The design focuses on fitting within existing seat-pitch dimensions while providing secure, easily accessible storage under the seat.
