Room Key 2.0: Streamlined Digital Access for Modern Hotels

Starwood Hotels is redefining the hotel arrival experience with the introduction of SPG Keyless, the industry’s first mobile keyless entry system designed for hotel guests.

Built into the SPG app and available to members of the Starwood Preferred Guest program, SPG Keyless lets guests skip the front desk, go directly to their room, and unlock the door with a simple tap on their smartphone. SPG Keyless is currently available at Aloft, Element and W Hotels properties in Beijing, Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles and Doha.

“SPG Keyless removes a common friction point for travelers and turns the first interaction with our guests into a more personal moment rather than a transactional one,” said Frits van Paasschen, president and CEO of Starwood. “This marks the start of a broader effort to combine mobile technology with warm service to enhance the hotel experience in meaningful ways.”

To use the service, SPG members must register their smartphone in the SPG app and enable push notifications. After booking a room at a participating property, members receive an invitation to opt in to SPG Keyless about 24 hours before arrival. Once check-in is complete, guests receive a push notification; when the room is ready the app updates with the assigned room number and a Bluetooth key that unlocks the door.

SPG Keyless streamlines arrival, reduces wait times, and gives guests more control over their stay while preserving the option to interact with hotel staff when desired. By leveraging smartphone technology and Bluetooth connectivity, the system provides a secure, convenient alternative to traditional plastic keys and key cards.

As mobile adoption rises, Starwood positions SPG Keyless as one step in an ongoing strategy to expand digital services that complement personalized hospitality. Guests who prefer face-to-face service can continue to use the front desk, while tech-savvy travelers benefit from a faster, contactless path to their rooms.

SPG Keyless reflects a growing trend in hospitality toward seamless, app-driven experiences. By integrating reservations, check-in, room assignment and key delivery into a single mobile workflow, the system aims to deliver both efficiency and a more welcoming arrival—allowing guests to begin their stay the moment they reach their door.
