PONANT Reveals World-First Luxury Expedition Cruise Innovation

PONANT is introducing a groundbreaking winter expedition, offering travelers the opportunity to explore the Great North during the Boreal winter. From January to February 2025, the cruise line will operate four voyages through Canada’s St. Lawrence River aboard Le Commandant Charcot, a first for scheduled cruise service in this season. The vessel is the world’s first liquefied natural gas–powered hybrid-electric polar exploration ship and features icebreaking capabilities designed for polar conditions.

With a Polar Class 2 ice rating, Le Commandant Charcot can navigate and break ice up to roughly eight feet thick, enabling visits to places typically inaccessible in winter. Each 13-day itinerary along the St. Lawrence River is designed for cold-season adventure and cultural encounters. Activities include guided kayaking in icy waters when conditions allow, ice fishing, dog sledding and skijoring, along with visits to Indigenous communities to learn about local traditions. Guests will also have opportunities to spot winter wildlife and, weather permitting, enjoy northern lights viewing from remote vantage points.

The January 17 and February 10 departures begin at Saint Pierre Island off the Atlantic coast, then proceed westward with scheduled calls in Sydney, Nova Scotia; the Magdalen Islands; Gaspé; Sept-Îles; the borough of La Baie; and Quebec City. For the sailings that start in Quebec City, the ship makes the return voyage on January 29 and February 22, completing the round-trip seasonal itineraries.

To enhance the onboard experience, British photographer Sue Flood and photo guide Ian Dawson will join selected departures. They will share field techniques, lead photo walks and give talks to help passengers capture the stark winter landscapes and wildlife encounters. The expeditions balance active, outdoor programming with comfortable expedition amenities aboard the ice-rated vessel, catering to travelers who seek immersive winter exploration combined with informative, expert-led interpretation.
