New Orleans Prepares to Open Major New Airport

There are many wonderful reasons to visit New Orleans, but until recently the airport was rarely among them. Outdated facilities, limited dining options, and a cramped layout made arrivals and departures feel like an afterthought. That’s changing: a major modernization project is transforming the terminal, parking, and passenger experience.

The centerpiece of the upgrade is a new, 35-gate terminal paired with a 2,100-space parking garage. Currently about halfway complete, the terminal introduces a single consolidated security checkpoint, a significant improvement over the current design that funnels travelers through a single concourse. The new layout will ease congestion and make connections faster and more intuitive.

Concourse centers will feature expanded dining and performance areas, bringing more life to the airport and showcasing the city’s culture. Travelers can expect an expanded mix of eateries that highlights local flavors alongside convenient quick-service options. Planned additions include popular New Orleans names such as Cafe du Monde, Emeril’s concepts, Midway Pizza, MoPho, the Cure cocktail bar, and Angelo Brocato’s gelateria, giving visitors and residents alike a taste of the city before they even leave the terminal.

Parking and ground transportation are also being rethought. The existing parking structure will be repurposed for long-term parking, while the new garage will serve daily short-term needs. In response to evolving travel habits, the airport will permit curbside pick-ups by ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft, eliminating the previous requirement that those services operate only from the parking facility. This change simplifies pickups and drop-offs and reduces extra walking with luggage.

Beyond aesthetic and operational upgrades, the modernization emphasizes passenger convenience and a stronger sense of place. Wider concourses, additional seating, improved signage, and more retail options aim to create an airport that reflects New Orleans’ hospitality and liveliness. Performance spaces in each concourse center will provide opportunities for local musicians and performers, bringing a touch of the city’s culture directly into the travel experience.

The renovation timetable targets a February 2019 unveiling for the new terminal and facilities, though individual elements may open in phases as construction progresses. When complete, the refreshed airport promises to be more efficient, welcoming, and distinctly New Orleans—making the journey into and out of the city a better part of the trip.
