The surroundings of Riells, a small rural village about one hour north of Barcelona, are defined by the cliffs of Gallifa and Bertí. The local terrain is rugged and arid, with reddish soil and stone that give the area a distinctive color and character. Recently, the village of Riells and Barcelona-based Comas-Pont Arquitectes completed a sensitive restoration of the village’s historic 11th-century square, returning its original atmosphere and improving the public realm for residents and visitors.

The restored historic center, located near the church of Sant Vicenç and the village cemetery, preserves and highlights 11th-century paving and materials. The new paving uses solid reddish brick that echoes the color and texture of the surrounding cliffs, visually reconnecting the square to the original landscape. The intervention focused on conserving historic features while creating a coherent, durable surface that functions for everyday life and for the village’s traditional festivals.
The rehabilitation introduced a comprehensive lighting plan to improve safety and ambience after dark, new public spaces for community activities and a renewed emphasis on local cultural uses. The existing well at the heart of the square was revitalized and integrated as the central element of the pavement design, reinforcing historical continuity and providing a clear focal point for gatherings.

To enhance usability without compromising the square’s flexible nature, a linear bench was installed along the church’s rest areas. This continuous seating preserves open space for festivals and daily circulation while creating comfortable spots for conversation and relaxation. Addressing summer humidity and improving shade, project designers planted an additional tree beside the existing fig tree, helping cool the square and making it more pleasant during warm months.
Site modifications respected the natural slope of the terrain. Where necessary, a discreet staircase with a solid handrail was introduced to negotiate level changes, improve accessibility and open views toward the distant cliffs of Bertí. These subtle adjustments enhance movement through the square and frame the surrounding landscape, reinforcing Riells’ close relationship with its natural setting.
One of the most significant outcomes of the project was reclaiming space previously occupied by vehicles. By prioritizing pedestrians and community use, the square now offers expanded public space for the village’s roughly 10,000 residents. The redesign has quietly changed daily life: more children play in the square, parents gather and socialize, and older residents find comfortable places to rest on the new benches—yet the atmosphere feels calmer and more relaxed.
With its renewed paving, landscaping and slower rhythm, the Riells village square offers visitors a pleasant destination for a day trip or a short overnight stay from Barcelona. The tranquil setting, historic fabric and improved public spaces make Riells an attractive stop for travelers seeking rural Catalan character and simple local life. Nearby accommodation choices include small guesthouses and rural B&Bs, many of which offer breakfast and an opportunity to extend the visit and experience village life firsthand.
