Luxury Living in Hamburg: Top New Apartments and Developments

The Fontenay Hamburg, a new luxury hotel and member of The Leading Hotels of the World, will open this fall on the shores of Lake Alster in Hamburg, Germany. Scheduled to welcome guests in October, the hotel stands out for its striking architecture: curved forms dominate the design, so there are no straight parallel walls. To suit these flowing lines, furnishings throughout the property were custom-made, including for 131 light-filled guestrooms and suites. Even the corridor carpets were specially woven in Hong Kong to follow the building’s elegant curvature.

Designed by Hamburg native Jan Störmer of Störmer Murphy and Partners, the hotel’s silhouette evokes three interlocking circles. Its façade and terraces are clad in thousands of white porcelain tiles that reflect the lake and surrounding parkland, creating a subtle dialogue with the water and sky.

Guests will find a range of amenities across the building. A rooftop gourmet restaurant offers panoramic views over the lake and city, while an indoor-outdoor swimming pool and full-service spa occupy prime rooftop space. Michelin-trained executive chef Cornelius Speinle, whose experience includes time at The Fat Duck in Bray, England, leads the kitchen. One floor below the main restaurant sits a bar with an expansive terrace and additional vistas. On the ground floor, a garden restaurant presents a Nordic-inspired menu in a relaxed setting.

For business and private events, the hotel provides four function rooms designed to host meetings and special occasions. The Fontenay’s arrival reinforces Hamburg’s ongoing transformation as a cultural and architectural destination. Recent additions to the cityscape include the newly opened Elbphilharmonie concert hall, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, and the Elbe promenade and redeveloped Speicherstadt areas influenced by contemporary architects such as Zaha Hadid.
