Salt Lake City Prepares to Welcome the New Eccles Theater

The revitalization of downtown Salt Lake City takes another step forward this fall with the opening of the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater, bringing residents and visitors access to world-class performances, including major Broadway touring productions.

Designed by HKS Architects in collaboration with Pelli Clarke Pelli and Cesar Pelli, the new venue features the 2,500-seat Delta Performance Hall, equipped with advanced acoustics and lighting designed to evoke the star-filled skies of a Utah canyon. In addition to the main hall, the center includes a 150-seat black box theater and the Encore Bistro. A striking six-story façade rises above Main Street, creating a prominent cultural landmark in the heart of downtown.

The theater’s inaugural 2016–2017 season showcases a lineup of acclaimed, Tony Award-winning productions such as Beautiful, Kinky Boots, Matilda, The Lion King and The Book of Mormon. The performance center complements the nearby City Creek development, which brings retail, dining and urban living spaces to the downtown core, and ties into broader transportation improvements like the TRAX light rail system linking Salt Lake City International Airport, downtown, and nearby mountain resorts.
