Lake Reschen (Reschensee), Italy
In northern Italy, Lake Reschen conceals the remnants of a submerged village. In the mid-20th century, a hydroelectric project merged and flooded several small mountain communities, displacing residents despite local opposition. The only structure left visible year-round is a 14th-century bell tower that rises from the lake surface. In winter, when the water freezes, visitors can walk out to the tower and reflect on the dramatic consequences of large infrastructure projects for local populations.
