Varosha, Cyprus
Once a glamorous Mediterranean resort frequented by international visitors and celebrities, Varosha was abandoned after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The area has since been fenced and left largely off-limits, with luxury hotels, shops and seaside promenades frozen in time. The fenced-off enclave provides a haunting example of a once-bustling coastal town suddenly emptied and left to decay.
