I love my birthday. I always have. So it’s no surprise to friends and family — the people who tolerate my annual countdown that starts about 90 days ahead — that I plan the day down to the smallest detail.
This year’s celebration took place in Bermuda at the elegant Fairmont Southampton, where my husband, Kevin, and I spent a wonderfully relaxing long weekend. Set on 100 acres of manicured grounds with its own pink-sand beach, the hotel feels like a place where birthday wishes come true — especially when you’re staying on the Fairmont Gold Floor, a “hotel within a hotel” with a dedicated concierge who knows how to make special occasions effortless.
My birthday plans included a lazy day at the Willow Stream Spa. Tucked on the hotel’s mezzanine level, the spa’s modest entrance hides an expansive sanctuary. At 31,000 square feet, the facility includes 15 treatment rooms, a steam inhalation room, multiple relaxation lounges and an indoor pool with floor-to-ceiling windows and massaging waterfall spouts.
The spa menu intrigued me: treatments designed to restore balance through nature’s elements — air, earth, fire and water. Three offerings stood out: Willow Stream Elements (a medicinal moor mud wrap, therapeutic bath and massage), Balance Body (a footbath and exfoliation followed by an oatmeal-and-honey scrub and a full-body massage) and Total Adjustment (an Ayurveda-inspired ritual featuring a footbath and scrub, botanical body mask, herbal exfoliation with dry brushing, a massage, hot towel wrap and mini-facial).
I decided to aim high and booked Total Adjustment. After changing into a robe and slippers, I settled onto a comfortable chaise longue with citrus-infused water and waited until a therapist escorted me to begin the treatment.
The ritual began with a soothing footbath. While my feet were pampered, I filled out a detailed questionnaire meant to tailor the treatment to my physical and emotional state that day. Based on Ayurvedic principles, the form helped determine my dominant dosha — Vata, Pitta or Kapha. My responses pointed toward Pitta, the dosha associated with fire and water and often connected with transformation — an appropriate theme for a birthday.
With the assessment complete, I was led into a treatment room for a dry-brush herbal exfoliation, followed by a botanical body mask. Wrapped in warm blankets, I closed my eyes and let the mask work its restorative effects.
I must have dozed, because before long the therapist returned, unwrapped the linens and guided me to a warm shower to rinse away the mask. Back on the table, a restorative massage melted away the final knots and tensions, leaving me deeply relaxed.
After about an hour and a half of pampering, I floated back to the lounge for a cup of herbal tea before returning to my room to change for dinner. Kevin and I celebrated with a birthday meal at Waterlot Inn, the hotel’s atmospheric steakhouse with a long history and a romantic setting.
For dessert, we enjoyed strawberries Foster prepared tableside — a simple, indulgent finish to a perfectly curated birthday.
