Toronto Pearson International Airport has become the first Canadian airport this year to handle 40 million passengers. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) reports that passenger numbers are continuing to climb and the airport is on track to exceed 41 million travellers before the end of 2015.
“Reaching 40 million passengers at Toronto Pearson is symbolic of the growth of our region,” said Howard Eng, president and CEO of the GTAA. “This airport is among the fastest-growing in North America and connects passengers to more than 65 percent of the world’s economy through daily non-stop flights. Our success is made possible by the commitment of our major carriers, including Air Canada and WestJet, and the dedication of the roughly 40,000 people who work at Toronto Pearson.”
The milestone reflects continued demand for international and domestic travel to and from the Greater Toronto Area. Increased route options, higher flight frequencies and investments in airport infrastructure have all contributed to passenger growth. As traffic rises, the GTAA is focusing on operational efficiency and passenger experience to accommodate the growing number of travellers while maintaining safety and service standards.
Achieving 40 million passengers underscores Toronto Pearson’s role as a key aviation hub in Canada and North America. The airport’s expanding network of non-stop destinations supports business and leisure travel and strengthens economic links with global markets. With additional growth expected through the remainder of the year, Toronto Pearson is preparing to manage higher volumes and continue its development as a major gateway for the region.
