The Wayfarer DTLA Review: What It’s Really Like to Stay Downtown LA

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: After a long day of travel, I arrived at The Wayfarer DTLA and was welcomed by a friendly staff member who held the front door open. The lobby feels chic and comfortable, with a large bookcase to the left and cozy seating to the right. Check-in was smooth, and my room was ready when I arrived.

GUEST QUARTERS: My room felt more like a furnished bedroom than a typical hotel space. To the left was a high-top desk, shelving, and pegs for hanging personal items. On the right, the bathroom featured a walk-in shower, a standard toilet, and a sink. In keeping with eco-friendly practices, the shower was supplied with full-sized shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion dispensers instead of single-use mini bottles.

An accent wall behind the bed featured a blue-gray sky motif with soft cloud-like shapes, which enhanced the room’s residential feel.

The TV was wall-mounted; although it wasn’t a smart TV loaded with streaming apps, it provided access to YouTube for music and podcasts. A small box next to the bed held a compact speaker that matched the room’s aesthetic. I didn’t spend long stretches in the room to use it much, but the speaker was a charming detail.

SERVICES/AMENITIES: One standout feature at The Wayfarer DTLA is a lobby beer wall—a self-serve tap wall that guests access with a prepaid card from the to-go food and beverage cart. The wall offers about ten different draft selections, letting guests sample multiple flavors. When I mentioned my delayed flight at check-in, the receptionist gave me a card for two complimentary pours. The taps were temporarily out of service when I tried them, but the staff honored the card and provided a can of Mango Cart instead.

The hotel has three dining venues: The Gaslighter Social Club, Lilly Rose, and the Rooftop. The Gaslighter, adjacent to the beer wall, functions as a grab-and-go spot, while Lilly Rose and the Rooftop are sit-down restaurants. My visit was short and busy, so I didn’t get to dine at any of them this time, but I plan to return to experience the menus and rooftop views.

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

  • Location: Conveniently located within a 15- to 20-minute walk of the GRAMMY Museum, L.A. Live, Microsoft Theater, and Crypto.com Arena, making it easy to enjoy the weather while walking to meetings and events.
  • Distinctive lobby feature: The beer wall provides a memorable and social amenity that appeals to beer enthusiasts and younger travelers.
  • Rooftop dining: The rooftop restaurant delivers excellent views of the Los Angeles skyline along with attractive outdoor dining space.
