Arrival/Check-in: I arrived on a gray, rainy New York City day. The Peninsula’s bell staff greeted me warmly, helped keep me dry, took my luggage and escorted me to the check-in area. The process was efficient and attentive, and I was shown to my suite quickly. (28/30)
Guest Quarters: I was stunned by the size and layout of the suite — more than 1,050 square feet, larger than many NYC apartments and a rare luxury in the city. The double-door entry opened into a living area on the right, which included a desk in the corner, a TV flanked by shelves and cabinets housing the minibar and sound system, a couch, two chairs and a coffee table. An additional chair and small table occupied a corner, and windows lined two of the three walls. A small table held three house-made cupcakes as a welcome touch.
To the left of the entry was a coat closet and a powder room. Beyond another doorway, a dressing area with a large vanity led to three separate spaces: a walk-in closet, the bathroom and the bedroom. The king-sized bed offered two nights of very comfortable sleep. The bedroom also included extra seating, a TV, a nightstand and an iPod docking station. The bathroom was especially impressive, with dual sinks, a large soaking tub with a wall-mounted TV and a rain shower—truly exquisite. (29/30)
Services/Amenities: Complimentary internet is a major plus; when I experienced a wireless glitch, the front desk promptly dispatched someone who provided a wired connection that solved the issue. The fitness center is generous for a hotel and fully staffed, with a wide range of equipment to satisfy most workout needs. Dining options on-site include Fives, the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, which I recommend based on past visits, and the Gotham Lounge, which offers an afternoon tea. The hotel spa is beautifully designed and contributes to the overall sense of luxury. (38/40)
The Experience: The location is ideal — just off Fifth Avenue in Midtown and within easy walking distance of many key destinations. The staff were consistently friendly and professional, and the entire stay felt both luxurious and comfortable. This property ranks among my favorites in New York City.
