Spirit Airlines Rises to Fourth Largest U.S. Carrier

A recent Wall Street Journal Middle Seat column ranked U.S. airlines by operational performance, and for the first time Spirit Airlines climbed into the top five, coming in fourth. That rise displaced large carriers such as American Airlines and United Airlines, which placed seventh and fifth, respectively.

The annual Middle Seat analysis measures punctuality, baggage handling, cancellations and the number of consumer complaints over a year. After finishing near the bottom in 2016 and 2017, Spirit improved markedly in 2018 to move ahead of several major competitors and secure the fourth spot.

Throughout 2018 Spirit posted relatively few delays and cancellations, and in October it led the nation for on-time departures. Those operational gains were a major factor in its improved ranking.

It’s important to note the ranking focuses on operational metrics rather than overall passenger experience. The list does not evaluate onboard amenities, fare structures or the extensive ancillary fees that contribute to Spirit’s low base fares.
