Six Senses Opens First European Resort in Portugal’s Douro Valley

Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas has opened its first European resort in Portugal’s UNESCO-listed Douro Valley. Set across 20 acres, Six Senses Douro Valley features 57 accommodations, including superior, deluxe and river rooms, as well as one-, two- and three-bedroom suites and villas designed to blend contemporary comfort with local character.

Leading the culinary program is Chef Paulo Matos, who focuses on regional ingredients and traditional techniques. Guests can enjoy signature dishes and shared plates prepared using open-fire ovens and clay pots, highlighting the authentic flavors of the Douro region.

The resort offers an immersive wine program that connects guests with the valley’s rich viticultural heritage. With more than 80 grape varieties cultivated in the Douro, visitors can learn from local winemakers and the resort’s wine directors, take part in tasting sessions, and experience hands-on activities such as planting, stomping and blending their own wines.

Wellness is a major focus at Six Senses Douro Valley. The spa spans over 24,000 square feet and includes 10 treatment rooms, a heated indoor pool with water jets, a steam room, a sauna and a laconium. Treatments draw on local resources—grape-based therapies using ingredients sourced from nearby vineyards and citrus treatments made with fruit from the Douro orchards. The spa also hosts a Visiting Practitioner program that brings in top wellness experts, and features signature offerings such as Yogic Detox and Yogic Sleep Programs suitable for different levels of yoga experience.

Six Senses Douro Valley joins the brand’s growing global portfolio as its tenth property, emphasizing sustainable practices, locally inspired experiences and a strong connection to the landscape and culture of the Douro Valley.
