Shakespeare in Oxford: Fall Events and Celebrations Guide

It has been a Bard-focused year in Oxford, England, and the city’s celebrations honoring the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare continue through the autumn. Events are staged across cinemas, clubs, libraries, theatres, concert halls and outdoor venues, offering a wide range of experiences from playful to serious. Highlights include Unsex Me Here at The North Wall Arts Centre on Oct. 26, a bold reinterpretation of Lady Macbeth performed by three male actors, and Sonnet Remix at the Oxford Playhouse on Nov. 4, where performance collective Live Canon presents new poems created in response to one of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets.

On Nov. 6, the North Wall Arts Centre hosts Carousing With Shakespeare, and on Nov. 23 editors and scholars of The New Oxford Shakespeare will join Sir Stanley Wells to debate the playwright’s lasting influence in Undead Shakespeare: The Writer Who Can’t Be Killed at the Oxford Martin School. While in the historic city, visitors can join an anniversary walking tour led by Blackwell’s (running through Oct. 28) and follow Bill’s Blooms, a floral trail at the Oxford University Botanic Garden open until Oct. 31. Museum programming also ties in to the season, including the themed display Stars, Globes and Magic at the Oxford University Museum of the History of Science.
