Puerto Rico Resort Reopens After $150M Restoration and Upgrade

The Caribe Hilton in San Juan has reopened after a $150 million restoration. Closed after Hurricane Maria, the resort underwent 20 months of comprehensive work to prepare for this relaunch.

Originally opened in 1949 as the first Hilton hotel outside the continental United States, the property now offers nearly 700 guestrooms, each of which received extensive renovations. Public areas were refreshed throughout, and building exteriors were updated to complement the resort’s coastal setting. The fitness and spa facility was rebuilt with oceanfront views and outfitted with updated equipment. The open-air lobby has been redesigned to maximize vistas of the water, and the resort’s 11 food and beverage outlets were given new looks and contemporary finishes. Meeting and event spaces were modernized and equipped with upgraded audiovisual systems to support conferences and social gatherings.

Beyond aesthetic improvements, the restoration focused on enhancing guest comfort and operational resilience. Room interiors were upgraded with new fixtures, furnishings and technology to meet modern traveler expectations while honoring the hotel’s historic character. Common areas were rethought to improve circulation, sightlines and access to outdoor spaces, creating a more seamless indoor-outdoor experience that highlights Puerto Rico’s tropical environment.

Landscape and exterior work improved pathways, lighting and coastal-facing terraces so guests can enjoy the oceanfront setting. Hospitality services were refreshed to support both leisure visitors and local residents seeking dining, wellness and event options. The rebuilt spa and fitness center provide updated wellness programming and equipment, and public dining venues offer refreshed menus and redesigned interiors to create a variety of culinary experiences.

“We are thrilled to re-introduce the iconic Caribe Hilton to guests and locals alike,” said Thomas J. Baltimore, Jr., chairman and CEO, Park Hotels & Resorts. “We have worked tirelessly to restore, reimagine and enhance the hotel, and we are confident that the finished product is worthy of the hotel’s legendary history. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Resort and to the wonderful island of Puerto Rico.”

The reopening underscores the resort’s role as both a landmark destination and a community resource. With updated accommodations, refreshed amenities and strengthened infrastructure, the Caribe Hilton aims to welcome a wide range of visitors—from business travelers attending conferences in the modern meeting spaces to families and couples seeking a beachfront retreat. The restoration blends contemporary comforts with the property’s historic legacy, ensuring the hotel remains a notable presence on Puerto Rico’s hospitality scene for years to come.
