ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: My husband and I arrived at Port Royal Wildwood Crest on a Friday evening in mid-September. Although it was outside the typical Jersey Shore season, we prefer visiting in September for milder weather and smaller crowds. The weekend we stayed offered beautiful weather and a full day on the beach. Even off-season, a firefighters’ convention brought more visitors, but check-in and parking were quick and efficient. Beach parking can be costly and scarce nearby, but Port Royal provides on-site parking and a below-ground garage, which made parking simple and hassle-free throughout our stay.
GUEST QUARTERS: Every guestroom at Port Royal features a private balcony and ocean views, creating a calm, welcoming atmosphere from the moment you arrive.
We stayed in an Ocean Suite that was spacious and ideal for families. The entry led into the bedroom area, which offered two queen beds, a shared nightstand, and a dresser with a television. Off to the right was a dressing area with a closet, vanity, and sink. The main bathroom, with a shower, toilet, and a second sink, sat just off this nook.
Beyond the bedroom, the suite opened into a kitchenette, dining area, and living space. The sofa converts to a queen-size bed, and an additional television was mounted near the dining table. Sliding glass doors from the living area opened onto a balcony with seating and direct views of the beach.

SERVICES/AMENITIES: Port Royal’s location places it steps from the beach, with two nearby parks and plentiful green space. While the hotel is not directly on the boardwalk, it’s a comfortable walk or bike ride away, and the rest of The Wildwoods is an easy drive for sightseeing and dining.
On-site dining is provided by the Royal Grille, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with both indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant seating was expanded in 2021. We enjoyed breakfast at the hotel before departing on Sunday — the coffee was excellent and the chorizo breakfast burrito was satisfying.
Other amenities include an outdoor pool, game room, maritime library, outdoor fire pit, and guest laundry, all adding convenience and entertainment options for guests.
TOP TAKEAWAYS:
Location is the standout feature at Port Royal—situated right on the beach, the hotel provides unobstructed views of sand and surf and easy beach access. For guests seeking oceanfront accommodations, this is one of the best options nearby.
Wildwood is known as the “Doo Wop Capital,” and that mid-century architectural influence can be seen throughout the island. While Port Royal’s design is more modern, nearby properties showcase that distinctive style and offer opportunities for a pleasant architectural stroll.
The hotel’s founder has a clear affinity for the sea, and a tasteful maritime theme runs through the property. It complements the contemporary, well-maintained accommodations rather than overwhelming them.
