Playtime Ideas: Fun Activities for Kids and Families

Anyone who has attended a trade show or convention knows how draining constant networking can be. Taking a few minutes to recharge can restore your energy and make the rest of the event more enjoyable.

The Boston Convention & Exhibition Center is responding to that need by creating an on-site space dedicated to relaxation and recreation — a playground for adults.

Called The Lawn on D, this experimental event space is designed to invite public interaction, spark creativity and explore ways to better integrate the convention center with the surrounding neighborhood.

Featuring arts, music, games, food and community-driven programming, The Lawn on D opens on Aug. 16 for an 18-month trial period. During that time, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority will test a variety of programs and activities to help inform plans for a permanent outdoor area that will be part of the BCEC expansion.

Open daily, the 2.7-acre outdoor space on D Street at the BCEC offers multiple options for relaxation and recreation. Visitors will find public seating and lounge chairs, rotating public art installations, a selection of games including bocce and ping-pong, and free Wi-Fi. Local food trucks provide refreshments, and a 5,000-square-foot tent with a permanent bar makes the Lawn suitable for private events as well.
