Pack Smart at PHX: Airport Baggage Tips and Terminal Guide

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has expanded its Early Bag Check service to the Rental Car Center. The free program, already offered at East Economy Parking and the 44th Street PHX Sky Train station, launched this week and is now available to travelers returning rental vehicles. Passengers flying American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, or US Airways can check their luggage immediately after returning a car, eliminating the need to carry large suitcases onto shuttle buses or through crowded terminal walkways.

The service requires bags to be checked at least 90 minutes before the scheduled flight departure. There is no additional charge for using Early Bag Check, although standard airline baggage fees still apply. By allowing customers to drop off bags earlier in their journey, the airport aims to make the end of a trip smoother and less stressful.

“We have received tremendous feedback from travelers who have used our Early Bag Check service and we felt it was important to offer this amenity to our rental car customers,” said Steve Grubbs, acting deputy aviation director for operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor. “At the end of a vacation or a business trip, we want passengers to have the convenience of checking their luggage early and walking directly to the security checkpoint.”

This addition complements Sky Harbor’s existing Early Bag Check locations and supports the airport’s broader goals of improving passenger flow and reducing congestion at peak travel times. Especially useful for travelers with heavy or oversized luggage, the Rental Car Center location helps shorten the transfer process and minimizes the hassle of coordinating baggage while navigating shuttles or station platforms.

Using Early Bag Check at the Rental Car Center is straightforward: after returning a vehicle, passengers present their flight information and checked baggage to the Early Bag Check staff. Airport personnel verify that flight times meet the 90-minute cutoff and process the luggage for airline transfer. Travelers can then proceed directly to the PHX Sky Train or security checkpoints without needing to carry their checked items.

The service is intended primarily for customers of the participating airlines, so passengers should confirm eligibility with Early Bag Check staff if they are flying with a different carrier. While the program removes the burden of transporting bags from the car return area to the terminal, travelers should still allow ample time for check-in, security screening, and any required airline procedures.

Early Bag Check at the Rental Car Center is part of Sky Harbor’s ongoing efforts to enhance passenger convenience through strategically placed services and improved ground transportation connections. By expanding access to early baggage drop-off, the airport expects to reduce dwell times on shuttles and at terminal entrances, improving the overall travel experience for thousands of customers each year.
