New Skiing Destinations and Experiences in the Western US

While major resorts like Vail and Aspen still attract large crowds, several upscale upgrades and renovations at smaller Western ski areas have expanded options for this season’s visitors.

One notable improvement is the return of a convenient rail link from Denver International Airport to the region’s ski destinations, helping travelers avoid I-70 congestion. The Winter Park Express, which operated intermittently in prior years, resumes service on Jan. 7 and will run every weekend through March 26. The train connects the airport to Denver’s Union Station and continues on to Winter Park, offering a stress-free alternative for skiers heading to the slopes.

Another attractive option this season is Taos, recently named North America’s Best in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice survey. Traditionally known for challenging terrain, Taos Ski Valley has begun a major revitalization: a $300 million expansion introduces The Blake, an alpine-style guesthouse with 80 rooms and suites, dedicated guest-service hausmeisters, a luxury spa and fitness center, and a tapas-style restaurant. These additions combine Taos’s renowned skiing with more luxurious lodging and amenities.

“For more than 60 years Taos has offered some of the best skiing in North America in addition to unrivaled culture, art, cuisine and outdoor activities,” said Suzanne Brown, vice president of marketing for Taos Ski Valley. “Today Taos continues to be a place full of history and a distinct mountain mystique. We are evolving to bring even more modern amenities and new experiences to the ski valley, without compromising our unique personality and appeal.”

Other recent upgrades across the West include infrastructure and equipment improvements: Crystal Mountain installed two new chairlifts, added three new snowmaking guns, and refreshed its rental fleet with new skis, snowboards and boots. Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort expanded its freestyle options with the new Bomber Bowl terrain park. Together, these enhancements provide more comfort, convenience and variety for skiers seeking alternatives to the largest resorts.
