Natural Habitat Adventures has introduced a new sailing expedition to Antarctica aboard the 75-foot polar vessel Australis. The program offers several itineraries, including a “fly both ways” option that debuts December 12, 2016, with departures from Punta Arenas, Chile. For 2017, the company plans two additional round-trip flight itineraries. Travelers can also select a one-way flight across the Drake Passage and sail back. Trip durations range from 12 to 17 days depending on the chosen route.
Chartered flights arrive at King George Island in the South Shetland Islands, where the sailing portion of the expedition begins. To preserve an intimate, low-impact experience, each voyage accommodates just seven guests. The per-person rate is $22,995 and covers the cruise, charter flights, and pre- and post-voyage hotel accommodations. Meals are provided on board and prepared by Natural Habitat Adventures’ naturalist expedition leader and crew members.
The itinerary includes between eight and 12 shore excursions, weather and sea conditions permitting. Many of these landings and activities are exclusive to the Australis, offering access to remote places typically unavailable on larger Antarctic cruises. Guests may have the opportunity to camp ashore for up to six nights, again subject to weather, and to explore regions that most tourists cannot reach.
Additional activity options include kayaking, guided hikes and abundant wildlife viewing. All activities are led by experienced crew and naturalist guides focused on safety and responsible, environmentally sensitive exploration of the Antarctic environment.
This small-ship sailing expedition emphasizes an immersive, low-impact approach to polar travel: limited passenger numbers, expert-led outings, and thoughtful planning to maximize wildlife encounters and shore time while minimizing environmental footprint. Prospective travelers should consult Natural Habitat Adventures for detailed packing lists, fitness requirements, and booking availability for the specific 12- to 17-day itineraries offered.
