MIA Rings in New Year with Single-Day Streaming Record

Miami International Airport closed 2015 with a record 44 million passengers, substantially surpassing the previous annual high of 40.9 million set in 2014. Through November 2015 the airport reported its strongest year-to-date growth, recording a 9.2 percent increase and 40.3 million passengers, and December contributed another 4 million travelers.

The upward trend continued into 2016 when Miami set a new single-day passenger record of 159,217 on January 2, eclipsing the prior single-day high of 155,620 established just two weeks earlier on December 19.

“These record-setting numbers were exclamation points on another outstanding year at MIA,” said Emilio T. Gonzalez, director of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. “Adding 3 million more passengers in 2015 translates into significant business revenue and job growth for our local tourism economy. We anticipate sustaining this momentum as new international airlines and routes begin service and our current carriers expand operations. We look forward to another record-breaking year at MIA.”
