An iconic Hawaiian resort will reopen to the public in 2022. Kona Village, located on the Kona Coast of Hawai‘i’s Big Island, has been closed since 2011. After a comprehensive renovation, the property will welcome guests again, drawing inspiration from the island’s history, local culture and natural environment to create a genuinely unique stay.
The resort will be managed by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. Originally developed by explorer Johnno Jackson in the 1960s, the site’s cultural and historical roots extend back more than a thousand years to the Polynesian settlers who first inhabited the area.
“We are honored to bring Rosewood’s A Sense of Place philosophy to such a hallowed resort in the most stunning of destinations,” said Sonia Cheng, chief executive officer of Rosewood Hotel Group. “Kona Village’s illustrious history and vibrant culture provide the perfect backdrop for Rosewood’s first property in the Hawaiian Islands.”
Situated less than 10 miles from Kona International Airport, the resort will include 150 distinct guest hales. Each accommodation is designed to include a private lanai and an outdoor shower, blending indoor comfort with outdoor living. Alongside these thoughtfully designed rooms, the property will offer a varied selection of dining venues, showcasing both local ingredients and culinary traditions.
A strong emphasis on local culture guides the renovation and reopening. The resort has committed to working closely with the surrounding community to protect, honor and perpetuate cultural traditions. Local artisans, cultural practitioners and community leaders are expected to play a role in shaping programming, design details and guest experiences so the property reflects and supports the place it calls home.
Rosewood Hotels & Resorts currently operates 24 properties worldwide and has an active pipeline of new developments, with 23 additional properties under construction. The reopening of Kona Village adds Rosewood’s first Hawaiian resort to its global portfolio and underscores the company’s focus on properties that reflect the character and history of their locations.
As the reopening approaches, the renovated Kona Village aims to offer travelers an authentic, respectful and immersive Hawai‘i experience—one that balances modern comfort with cultural sensitivity and environmental stewardship. Guests can expect accommodations and programming that honor the land, the ocean and the traditions of the community while delivering the high standard of service associated with Rosewood.
