Helsinki Sparkles: Top Holiday Lights and Festive Events 2026

Helsinki’s Senate Square has hosted New Year’s Eve celebrations since 1932. This year’s December 31 festivities will continue the long tradition with live music, a lively atmosphere and an impressive fireworks display.

On the small island of Uunisaari, easily reached from the city center via a pontoon bridge, a series of holiday events offers something for many tastes. On December 10 you can enjoy a traditional Finnish sauna, a festive Christmas dinner and a live music concert. Additional sauna events are scheduled for December 27 and January 3. Uunisaari will also host a two-day New Year’s Market on January 2–3, showcasing Finnish design, handicrafts and vintage finds.

From January 6–10 the Lux Helsinki light festival brightens the darkest days of winter with large-scale light installations created by international light and media artists. The installations transform public spaces across the city and the festival is free to attend, making it an accessible highlight for residents and visitors alike.

These seasonal events reflect Helsinki’s lively winter culture, blending traditional Finnish experiences like sauna and holiday markets with contemporary public art and large public celebrations. Whether you prefer quiet island saunas, browsing design and vintage stalls at a market, or taking in dramatic light art and fireworks in the city center, Helsinki offers a range of memorable winter activities.
