ONE OF THE BUSIEST AIRPORTS in the world lies just 14 miles west of Central London. London Heathrow Airport, the busiest in the United Kingdom, served more than 78 million passengers in 2017 and exceeded 80 million passengers in 2018.
As the primary hub for British Airways, Heathrow handles enormous passenger volumes while also working to reduce its environmental footprint and support surrounding communities affected by airport operations.
Located within Hillingdon Borough, Heathrow’s growth has brought increased air traffic and, with it, greater noise exposure for nearby residents. While noise remains a challenge, Heathrow has embedded awareness of this issue into its operations. The airport’s Fly Quiet and Green program encourages airlines to adopt quieter, lower-emission procedures and technologies. Despite passenger numbers roughly doubling since the 1970s, measures taken by the airport and airlines have reduced noise levels significantly.
Heathrow enforces strict operational rules for aircraft using the airport, including tightened controls on night flights. When airlines breach noise or operational limits, the airport issues fines; those penalties, along with direct airport contributions, fund initiatives that benefit local communities.
As part of its Noise Action Plan through 2023, Heathrow researched the long-term effects of aircraft noise on nearby residents. The findings highlighted sleep disruption, potential cardiovascular impacts, effects on cognitive development, and increased annoyance. These results have informed ongoing efforts to protect public health and improve living conditions for people who live and work near the airport.
Incentives for quieter, greener aircraft have proven effective. Heathrow reports that the year after introducing sustainability incentives was its greenest and quietest on record. Newer, more efficient models such as Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s are increasingly common at the airport, reflecting a broader industry shift toward modern fleets.
The incentive program has also influenced airlines that regularly operate at Heathrow to accelerate fleet renewal in order to qualify for rewards tied to reduced noise and emissions.
Looking ahead, Heathrow plans to expand. In 2018, the British Parliament approved a proposal for airport expansion, a decision intended to support economic growth across the United Kingdom if the project proceeds as planned.
