Fly Finnair Business Class: Luxurious Comfort and Service Review

On the Ground: Checking in at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport Terminal 2 was effortless. I was ticketed through to my connecting flight from New York to Washington, D.C., and the counter agent—courteous and efficient—already had information that my onward flight on a different carrier had been canceled because of a winter storm. She quickly arranged alternatives and secured a train ticket for me. I was escorted through the priority security lane and reached the lounge with a short walk between Gates 36 and 37. I traveled with only carry-on luggage; had I checked a bag, it would have been tagged as priority.

Pre-Flight: Finnair’s Helsinki lounge presents a calm, minimalist environment designed for comfort and relaxation. The spacious layout includes intimate seating groups and private corners, plus a narrow upper deck with deep chairs and ottomans overlooking the runway. Natural light filled the space and plentiful power outlets made it easy to keep devices charged. Felted wall panels softened airport noise, and the buffet offered a pleasing selection of hot and cold dishes presented on attractive Marimekko dinnerware.

Connecting to the complimentary WiFi was straightforward, and I spent a productive two hours catching up on emails and reading. The lounge’s earthy tones, gentle creams and light wood accents created a soothing atmosphere that left me relaxed by the time boarding began. When my flight was called, boarding proceeded without delay and I was promptly offered a refreshing drink. The entire boarding process moved quickly across cabins, and we departed on schedule.

In-Flight: My window seat provided generous space and practical storage. The seat converted into a bed but did not become fully flat—there was a slight incline with my feet positioned lower than my head—yet I still managed to sleep comfortably for the middle portion of the flight after lunch. Soft sheets, a plush quilted comforter and a high-quality pillow made resting easy. Amenity kits were utilitarian and wrapped in eco-friendly paper. The entertainment system offered a wide selection of first-run international films, games and global music. I spent time following our route on the flight map and finally finished a novel I had been reading for months.

As this was a daytime flight, a full lunch service was provided. The meal began with an amuse-bouche of organic root vegetable chips, followed by a salad and a creamy chanterelle soup accompanied by a small platter of Baltic herring roe, smoked elk and Lappish baked cheese. For the main course I selected salmon with a pepper crust and a potato-leek ragout—one of three entrée options. I paired the salmon with a Schlumberger Riesling from Alsace. Dessert choices included fresh fruit, a selection of cheeses or a slice of strawberry cake. The tableware was a memorable detail: the glassware design, Ultima Thule by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala (introduced in 1969), remains in continuous use and is regarded as a Finnish design classic—an elegant touch to the in-cabin service.

The galley snack bar offered light fares throughout the flight, and when I requested tea it arrived promptly, hot and freshly brewed. About ninety minutes before landing the crew served a light meal featuring a Scandinavian shrimp sandwich with fresh fruit on the side.

The Experience: Overall the journey was consistently positive, highlighted by airport and onboard staff who delivered friendly, professional service with evident pride. The combination of efficient ground handling, a calming lounge experience, attentive cabin service and quality catering made for a comfortable trip from start to finish.
