Travelers often look for reliable, fast, and free WiFi when passing through airports, and a recent analysis shows that the Pacific Northwest is leading the way in North America.
Software firm Ookla LLC released a new ranking of airports across the continent, and Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA), commonly called Sea-Tac, took the top spot for the fastest airport WiFi. This year Sea-Tac surpassed last year’s leader, Denver International Airport (DEN).
Sea-Tac’s performance stands out not only among North American airports but also compared favorably with past global leaders. Previous winners from other parts of the world include Gold Coast Airport in Australia, Congonhas–São Paulo Airport in Brazil, Dubai International Airport, Incheon International Airport in South Korea, Sheremetyevo International Airport in Russia, and Mohammed V International Airport in Morocco. In this latest North American ranking, Sea-Tac emerged ahead of those strong international performers.
Denver, which had held the top position for the previous two years, moved to second place. Other airports rounding out the list of fastest free WiFi in North America include Calgary International Airport, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, Orlando International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport.
The rankings are based on speed tests carried out between January and April of this year, focusing specifically on the free WiFi networks provided to passengers. Ookla’s methodology uses real-world measurements that represent typical user experiences, allowing travelers to compare connectivity quality across airports.
Reliable airport WiFi matters for many reasons: streaming entertainment during long layovers, staying productive while working remotely, checking boarding passes and flight updates, and keeping in touch with family and colleagues. Airports that invest in faster, more consistent free WiFi provide a smoother experience for passengers who depend on connectivity during travel.
While no ranking can assist with delays at security or crowded terminals, knowing which airports offer quicker free WiFi can help travelers plan better—whether that means streaming a show while waiting, taking care of last-minute work, or simply finding the best spot to charge devices and stay connected. For those flying through Sea-Tac, the recent results suggest a strong chance of reliable, fast free WiFi service.
As airports continue to upgrade their networks, passengers should expect improvements in speed and coverage. Still, performance can vary by terminal, concourse, and time of day, so it’s wise to test the connection when you arrive and move to different areas if service is inconsistent. For now, the Pacific Northwest’s Sea-Tac stands out as the top choice for travelers who prioritize fast, free WiFi in North America.
