On the Nile’s west bank near Luxor, the Valley of the Kings holds the most famous collection of New Kingdom pharaonic tombs. Carved into the hills beneath a pyramid-shaped peak, these tombs served as the final resting places for about 65 pharaohs. Lavishly furnished for the afterlife with treasures and ritual objects, some tombs contain extraordinary artifacts—most famously the golden funerary mask discovered in the tomb of Tutankhamun.
