British Airways Adds Third A380 Route: New Destination Revealed

British Airways has announced the introduction of Airbus A380 services on its London Heathrow (LHR) to Johannesburg (JNB) route, beginning February 12, 2014. Johannesburg will be the airline’s third destination to receive the A380, joining Los Angeles (LAX) and Hong Kong (HKG). Initially, the A380 will operate three weekly flights to South Africa, increasing to six weekly services from March 10, 2014.

Earlier plans for the A380 schedule include a Los Angeles service and a Hong Kong route. The carrier’s first scheduled A380 service to Los Angeles is set to operate five times a week starting September 24, with plans to expand to twice-daily operations from April 10, 2014. The Hong Kong route will receive daily A380 flights beginning October 22, 2014.

The airline’s A380s are configured to accommodate a total of 469 passengers across four cabins. The layout provides 14 first class seats, 492 business class seats, 55 premium economy seats and 303 economy seats. (Note: seat counts as published by the airline.)

Adding the A380 to the Johannesburg route signals British Airways’ continued focus on deploying its largest aircraft on high-demand long-haul services, offering increased capacity and the product features associated with the superjumbo.
