Anantara Opens First Luxury Resort in Africa: What to Know

Minor Hotel Group has assumed management of the acclaimed Indigo Bay Resort & Spa on Mozambique’s east coast and rebranded the property as Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort & Spa. Situated on the Bazaruto Archipelago, just off the mainland, the luxury resort comprises 44 villas that offer guests a choice of garden or shoreline views.

The resort’s facilities cater to a variety of guest needs, with six dining venues and bars, a family pool, a fitness center, an 18-hole golf course, and a spa featuring five treatment rooms. These amenities position the property as a full-service luxury escape ideal for couples, families, and leisure travelers seeking both relaxation and activity.

Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort & Spa marks the Anantara brand’s first hotel in Africa. Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotel Group, described the launch as a major milestone for the brand. He explained that the company is actively pursuing further opportunities across the African continent, both in partnership with local stakeholders and through independent ventures, with the aim of expanding the Anantara footprint in the region.

The rebranding follows the resort’s strong reputation for service and environmental sensitivity, and the new management intends to build on these strengths while integrating Anantara’s signature hospitality and wellness offerings. Guests can expect a blend of local Mozambican charm with Anantara’s international standards in dining, spa treatments, and guest experiences.

While the property maintains its intimate scale with 44 villas, the varied accommodation options and spacious public areas provide privacy and comfort. Shoreline villas deliver direct access to beaches and ocean views, whereas garden villas offer a tranquil setting surrounded by native vegetation. The resort’s layout and services are designed to support both active itineraries—such as golf, water sports, and island excursions—and restorative stays focused on spa treatments and relaxation.

Minor Hotel Group’s expansion of the Anantara brand into Africa signals a strategic interest in the continent’s growing luxury travel market. The group has indicated plans to evaluate additional sites and partnerships that align with Anantara’s lifestyle and wellness positioning, aiming to introduce the brand to other key African destinations over time.
