Alaska Airlines Launches Flights to Costa Rica: Routes & Tips

Alaska Airlines has launched new service between Los Angeles and Costa Rica’s two main international airports, expanding its route network from its Southern California focus city. The carrier now offers eight weekly flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to San José (SJO) and Liberia/Guanacaste (LIR), increasing travel options between Southern California and Central America.

John Kirby, vice president of capacity planning at Alaska Airlines, noted that Costa Rica is a top Central American destination for U.S. travelers and a leading spot for adventure tourism. He said the new service strengthens Alaska’s presence in the region, allowing the airline to provide up to 80 peak-season weekly departures from Southern California to Latin America—more than any other carrier operating from that market.

The new routes are operated with fuel-efficient Boeing 737-800 aircraft, offering modern onboard amenities designed for passenger comfort. Travelers can stream free and premium entertainment directly to their personal devices and use 110V and USB outlets at every seat to charge laptops, smartphones and tablets. Food and beverage service includes items sourced from well-known Pacific Northwest brands, reflecting the airline’s regional culinary ties. For passengers seeking enhanced in-flight entertainment, tablets are available for rent that include recent movie releases, TV shows, games, music and digital magazines.

These additions broaden nonstop travel choices between Los Angeles and Costa Rica’s two largest gateways, supporting both leisure travel and growing demand for regional connectivity. By combining frequent departures, modern aircraft and a range of onboard services, Alaska Airlines aims to make travel to Costa Rica more convenient and enjoyable for customers flying from Southern California.
