There’s no getting around it: airplane seats are often uncomfortable. Airbus is developing a new seating concept designed to improve comfort in business class and make longer flights more pleasant.
The manufacturer revealed plans for a “Settee Corner”–style seat that gives passengers multiple seating options. Travelers can sit upright, recline traditionally, or recline further into a couch-like position for added relaxation.
The concept, developed by Airbus in collaboration with seat maker Geven, evolves from a conventional economy three-seat layout. The slightly curved design enables passengers to fully recline while remaining buckled for rest, or to sit upright and fasten their seat belt for takeoff and landing. Each seat retains the expected conveniences, including under-seat storage, overhead bin access, an in-flight entertainment screen and a tray table.
Importantly, the new seats are designed to replace existing business-class seats without occupying extra space. They match the length of traditional business seats but are significantly lighter, reducing weight by an estimated 30–50 percent.
By blending a flexible reclining range with familiar onboard amenities and a lighter structure, the Settee Corner concept aims to enhance passenger comfort without compromising cabin layout or safety standards. Airlines adopting this design could offer a more adaptable and comfortable experience for business-class travelers while maintaining efficient use of cabin space and reducing aircraft weight.
As the aviation industry continues to balance passenger comfort, safety and operational efficiency, innovations like this one illustrate how seat design can evolve to meet changing traveler expectations. If implemented widely, the Settee Corner seats could become a notable upgrade in the pursuit of a more restful, convenient flight experience.
