In December, Hyatt Hotels unveiled a secluded sanctuary within the ecologically rich Mayakoba resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Andaz Mayakoba Resort, an upscale oceanfront property, blends contemporary design with authentic Mayan culture, creating a refined yet locally grounded escape.
The resort itself is set amid a lush landscape of canals, lagoons, mangroves and tropical flora and fauna, offering a calm and restorative atmosphere. The on-site spa elevates that sense of relaxation, making it a standout feature of the property.
Since opening in April, Naum Spa at Andaz Mayakoba has become a guest favorite. During a recent visit I experienced its offerings firsthand and found the spa’s design and treatments thoughtfully conceived to reflect the surrounding environment and cultural influences.
The 10,000-square-foot spa is tucked among palms and gardens and features six open, airy treatment cabins and two hydrotherapy areas. Its extensive menu ranges from exfoliating facials and aromatherapy massages to hot stone treatments and body wraps, with many services inspired by Mayan traditions and using natural, locally sourced products.

Upon arrival I was welcomed with a traditional drink made from rice and coconut water spiced mildly, which was a calming introduction as I took in the spa’s natural wood finishes and floor-to-ceiling windows that open to the jungle beyond. Naum Spa’s design intentionally connects guests to nature through open-air treatment rooms, abundant daylight and the ambient sounds of waterfalls and local birdlife.
Naum, the spa’s namesake, refers to a Mayan concept of consciousness. The Naum Rituals—treatment sequences focused on mind, body and spirit—are rooted in local tradition and are fully customizable to each guest’s wellness goals. I chose a 75-minute aromatherapy Swedish Naum Ritual of Massage; other options include the Naum Ritual of the Body and the Naum Ritual of the Face.
The treatment unfolds in three parts. It begins with a Mayan Time of Reflection in a quiet room, complete with a warmed aromatherapy neck press and fruit-infused water, allowing time to set intentions. The second phase includes hydrothermal prep—time in the steam room and a sensation shower—followed by the massage itself.
After selecting an aromatherapy blend, the massage left me deeply relaxed. The therapist was attentive to my preferences throughout the session. When the treatment concluded I was led to a private outdoor relaxation area surrounded by palms and gardens, where I enjoyed chilled lemongrass white tea and a light plate of fruit and cookies.

I then returned to the hydrotherapy area to enjoy the sauna and hot tub, both offering views of the vibrant palms that surround the spa. An interactive Body Bliss aromatherapy bar allowed me to craft a personalized scent based on intentions of balance, happiness and well-being. My blend of mint, rose and lavender was bottled for me to take home.
Beyond massages and hydrotherapy, the spa provides hairstyling, waxing, skincare, nail and cosmetic services, as well as lifestyle offerings like yoga and guided meditation. While I did not sample those services, the quality of the massage suggests the broader menu maintains the same level of care.
As someone who manages anxiety, wellness elements are essential to my travel experience. Naum Spa at Andaz Mayakoba Resort delivered one of the most transformative resort spa visits I’ve had. The thoughtful design and service reflect both the historic Mayan culture and the local landscape, producing a memorable and restorative retreat.
