Introduced in 2012 in the Maldives, PER AQUUM Niyama’s Subsix, the world’s first underwater nightclub, has been redesigned to better reflect its marine setting and reestablish itself as a unique underwater playground.
Situated roughly 19.5 feet below the waterline and more than 1,600 feet from shore, Subsix is accessed by speedboat. Visitors arrive at a private jetty and descend a three-tier staircase into the deep navy waters of the Indian Ocean to reach the venue.
Inside, guests dine on contemporary cuisine and sip inventive cocktails while watching marine life glide past. Attracted by the club’s lighting, reef fish and even reef sharks can be seen swimming close to the glass, offering unobstructed views through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The redesign introduced a range of bespoke elements inspired by the surrounding reef: chairs with soft, anemone-like “fingers” for comfort, a ceiling arrangement that resembles a coral garden of chandeliers, and a central clam-inspired bar. The bar’s fiberglass shell houses mood lighting that transitions from bright white in the morning to lavender at dinner and deep blue in the late evening, creating a dynamic atmosphere that complements the shifting ocean light outside.
“Subsix is the closest you can get to the reef without a mask or wetsuit. Guests fell so in love with the setting from the start that we knew we had hit on something special and had to take it to the next level,” said Dietmar Koegerl, general manager of PER AQUUM Niyama.
Subsix is part of Niyama, a luxury island resort located approximately a 40-minute seaplane flight south of Malé. The venue blends immersive underwater views with refined dining and stylish design to offer an unparalleled experience for visitors seeking both adventure and relaxation in the Maldives.
