SAS Economy Extra: Upgrade Guide and Benefits

On the Ground: If I had researched my Economy Extra ticket to Stockholm more thoroughly, I would have known I could check in with business-class passengers. When I showed the attendant my e-ticket she led me to the business-class counter. My bags were checked through to Oslo, my final destination, and I was on my way in less than two minutes. I cleared security and still had more than three hours to catch up on email and make a few calls. (30/30)

Pre-flight: A friendly flight attendant welcomed me at the entrance and directed me to a separate Economy Extra cabin. This is not simply a zone within economy; it’s a distinct cabin on the aircraft. The 2-3-2 seat layout creates a roomier feel compared with standard economy. I was shown to my seat and offered a pre-flight beverage. (28/30)

In-flight: After takeoff we were given a light snack and a drink, followed later by dinner. Here the airline could improve: the meal choice was limited to chicken or fish. I selected the chicken, which was flavorful and served in a generous portion, but a broader menu would be welcome. After dinner I reclined my seat, raised the footrest, picked a movie from the personal video-on-demand system and slept comfortably. (37/40)

The Experience: Given the current economic climate, SAS Economy Extra is an excellent option for business travelers looking to reduce costs and for frequent flyers who want more comfort than standard economy. The larger seats, the separate cabin and the added amenities make it a compelling middle ground between economy and premium cabins. The cabin crew were consistently professional—attentive, pleasant and mindful of passengers’ needs. Overall, SAS has found a good balance with Economy Extra.
