Grupo Posadas Hotel News and Industry Update

With 140 hotels and more than 23,000 rooms across eight brands, Grupo Posadas has long been a major force in Mexico’s hospitality industry. Headquartered in Mexico City, the company has steadily refined its strategy, aiming to broaden its reach by developing new product lines and expanding into new markets — including a recent push into the United States.

Grupo Posadas set an ambitious expansion target to double its number of hotels by 2020. “It’s an ambitious goal, but we have worked to create the foundation to achieve it,” said Javier Barrera Segura, vice president of franchises. A central element of that foundation is a diverse portfolio of brands designed to meet the needs of different types of travelers.

The company’s strategy reflects years of deliberate evolution. In 2012 Posadas sold its South American brands, Caesar and Caesar Business, to AccorHotels. In 2014 it launched the Gamma de Fiesta Inn franchise model, enabling independently owned hotels to affiliate with a well-known brand while preserving operational flexibility. The Gamma model allows owners to choose between a management agreement, where Posadas operates the hotel, and a franchise arrangement in which owners retain control but gain access to Fiesta Inn branding, distribution channels and marketing support.

One of the most notable moves came in 2015, when Posadas announced plans to bring Live Aqua Hotels and Resorts — its upscale, stylish brand — to the U.S. This international expansion was backed by a $450 million investment from Bighorn Capital to develop five properties in Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Houston and Washington, D.C. Début Hotel Group, which manages boutique lifestyle brands such as Dream and Time Hotels, was selected to operate the U.S. properties. The first Live Aqua in the United States was scheduled to open in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood.

“We are very excited to introduce American and international travelers to Live Aqua, our luxury brand with a distinctive Latin style and warm, attentive service,” Barrera said. He added that partners Bighorn Capital and Début Hotel Group bring strong U.S. market knowledge, helping Posadas establish Live Aqua as a meaningful lifestyle brand in the United States.

At home, Posadas has refreshed its flagship Fiesta Americana brand with a modern logo, updated graphics and upgraded amenities, décor and technology. In April the company introduced the Fiesta Americana Resort Collection, a curated group of 12 resort properties in prime beach destinations. The collection clarifies the range of options under the Fiesta Americana banner and highlights properties that blend leisure and business services.

Ana Gon, vice president of sales and marketing, noted that Fiesta Americana properties also serve the MICE market (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions), which has been growing thanks to improved air connectivity. For example, the Los Cabos property offers about 20,000 square feet of meeting space.

Recent openings and upgrades include the 207-room Fiesta Americana Monterrey Pabellon M, located in one of Mexico’s most important business hubs, and the 443-room Grand Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta, an adults-only, all-inclusive complement to an existing property. The Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun rolled out a new e-concierge app for guests to arrange transfers, spa treatments and activities, while adding a 40,000-square-foot spa and a $2.2 million children’s club. The 102-room Fiesta Americana Cozumel reopened in 2014 following a $17 million renovation.

Grupo Posadas manages a broad set of hotel concepts designed to serve nearly every key traveler segment in Mexico. The company groups its brands into five categories: signature upscale (Fiesta Americana and Grand Fiesta Americana); lifestyle smaller upscale (Live Aqua and The Explorean); business class for budget-conscious corporate travelers (Fiesta Inn, Fiesta Inn Loft and Gamma); and economy for value-driven leisure guests (One). Beyond hotels, Posadas operates vacation membership programs under the Vacation Club, including Front Door, the Fiesta Americana Vacation Club and Kivac.

Looking ahead, Posadas is exploring further regional expansion. “We are investigating both the Caribbean and Central American markets,” Barrera said, signaling continued growth beyond Mexico and the U.S.
