Heli-skiing season is now underway in Türkiye, with the 2022 season opening in the Kaçkar Mountains of the Black Sea region. Heli-skiing—off-trail downhill skiing reached by helicopter rather than lift—has made Türkiye a growing destination for winter-sports enthusiasts. Deep powder, long descents and reliable snowpack draw skiers and snowboarders from the United States, Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy and Russia through the end of March.

Located between Rize and Artvin provinces in northeastern Türkiye, the Kaçkar Mountains rise to nearly 12,800 feet and feature more than 400 marked runs. Ski elevations in the region span roughly 4,000 to 11,800 feet above sea level, offering vertical drops of 2,300 to 4,000 feet. Those geographic features, combined with varied terrain and a generally stable snowpack, make the Kaçkars particularly well suited to heli-skiing and backcountry adventures.
The region offers a full range of visitor services and lodging to support heli-skiing trips. Accommodation choices include boutique hotels, guesthouses and hostels suited to different budgets. Local service providers include professional ski guides, licensed tourist guides and experienced heli pilots. Additional on-site support—such as massage therapists, interpreters and logistics teams—helps international visitors plan safe and comfortable heli-skiing experiences.
Beyond skiing, the Kaçkar area is rich in cultural attractions and regional cuisine. Visitors can explore historic buildings with roots in the Middle Ages and discover local culinary traditions unique to the Black Sea region. Signature dishes include hamsi (fried or cured Black Sea anchovies), the regional style of Turkish breakfast, muhlama (a warm blend of cheese, corn flour and butter), turşu kavurması (fried pickles) and mısır ekmeği (cornbread). These flavors provide a memorable complement to active days on the slopes.
Heli-skiing in the Kaçkar Mountains offers a combination of expansive terrain, dependable snow and local hospitality that appeals to experienced skiers and adventurous travelers. With season dates typically running into late March, now is an ideal time to consider guided heli-skiing packages, secure accommodations and connect with local operators who can tailor routes and services to skill level and safety requirements.
